Tightwad Thrift Brings Bright New Spin on Secondhand Shopping to Del Rio

Owner of Tightwad Thrift, Victoria Silva, showcases the green room, full of greenery and cute planters at the opening of the new secondhand shop located at 1001 Ogden St.

Among the busy events across town this past weekend was the grand opening of the new, colorful, and fun secondhand shop, Tightwad Thrift located at 1001 E. Ogden St.

Originally located in San Antonio, Texas, Tightwad Thrift opened its first location there in 2021, providing affordable, quality clothing to the community. During its time in San Antonio the shop provided community aid, supported local artists and businesses, opened an art pantry alongside local advocates, built a positive environment for its shoppers, and diverted thousands of pounds of clothing from landfills.

Now, owner of Tightwad Thrift, Victoria Silva, is ready to bring that same mission to and expand that work in Del Rio. “I moved to Del Rio a few years ago to be with family, I originally started  Tightwad Thrift in San Antonio in 2021 and fate brought me over here,” Silva shared. “Essentially our goal is to just provide good quality clothing at affordable prices for essentially everyone who walks through the door.”

The store is bright and colorful with artwork lining almost every wall and a green room with plants that are cultivated by Silva’s mother. The atmosphere is notably bright and Silva is friendly, greeting everyone with a smile as they enter the room. “I’ve been thrifting my entire life, ever since I was little, and I noticed that in some, not all, because we have some great thrift stores here, but in some second hand stores that I visited, there’s a lack of personality or attention to detail in the space and I want this space to feel just like you’re walking into a regular boutique or retail store,” Silva stated. “Just to create a good atmosphere in here so that it feels good when you’re second hand shopping because a lot of people don’t due to the distinguishable difference between thrift stores and retail stores, so I just wanted to put thrifting, or second hand shopping, on the same playing field so people feel more comfortable and welcome, and have a good experience.”

Tightwad Thrift is open Monday-Saturday from 10am-6pm and Sundays from 12-5pm, and they are accepting donations. “We do always accept clothing donations of any kind and this month we did receive a few that we will be selling at $1.50 and at the end of the month we are going to be donating to the Casa foundation so that will be our community aid for this month and every month will be a new local foundation or charity,” Silva told us. “Anything that doesn’t make it to our racks, on Sunday we’re gonna be giving away so that nothing gets thrown away or ends up in a landfill.”

Silva also mentioned that this first week, all purchases will be tax free so feel free to stop by Del Rio’s newest second hand store and show some support!
