Introducing Divine Energy Tattoo: A New Tattoo Shop By Women, For Women

Local tattoo artist, Marycruz Flores, poses in front of her female-led shop, Divine Energy Tattoo, located at 600 E. 15th Street.

Connect Del Rio recently caught up with local artist Marycruz Flores to talk about her brand new tattoo shop, Divine Energy Tattoo, located at 600 E. 15th Street. The shop has been open since the end of March and has quickly grown in popularity since then.

Marycruz, or “Mari” as she likes to be called, began tattooing three years ago, after her partner, Priscilla Salinas, who manages Divine Energy Tattoo alongside her, bought her her first set of tattoo equipment and encouraged her to begin practicing the craft. Originally, Mari told us, she didn’t plan on becoming a tattoo artist, but always knew she would make a living through art. “I’ve been drawing my whole life, I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember and I always knew I wanted to make a living doing art, I just didn’t know how," she stated. “That love for art finally led me to tattooing.”

Having started in a male dominated industry and observing the nerves that many female clients felt when entering such masculine spaces, Mari and Priscilla decided to create their own space for women, though all are welcome, to feel comfortable and safe being tattooed. “I’ve been in a mostly male-run shop and it’s very intimidating, especially for first timers, and it’s important to me to make everyone that comes in here feel safe and relaxed,” Flores told us. “I definitely like to cater to the female clientele and energy, because I know if I were getting a tattoo for the first time, I’d want to come here and be tattooed by another woman in an environment that feels comforting and safe,” she shared while showing us around the shop which is decked out in cute neon signs, artwork, and bright, inviting lighting, all features that along with the friendly staff, contribute to the feminine vibes.

They also emphasized their goal of mentoring and training female tattoo artists in the hopes of creating a space where they can learn and grow in their craft. “I want to have more passionate and dedicated female artists get inspired to learn and to feel comfortable coming here to ask me for advice, and want to learn,” Flores shared. “I would love to provide that space and opportunity for them,” she continued. “Eventually one of my biggest goals is to have multiple female artists working here.”

Divine Energy Tattoo is open Monday-Friday from 12-8pm for consultation and by appointment only except for Wednesdays, when they have a Walk-in $35 flash tattoo special from 1-8pm for anything quarter-sized and black ink, no appointment needed. “It’s a special that I started, to give people a chance to come and get a tattoo whenever they want,” she elaborated. “Especially for first timers getting tattooed, starting with something small just to get the feel of it and ease the nerves.”

A look inside the mobile tattoo trailer available soon for special event rental and mobile tattoo services.

Along with the Wednesday Walk In Special, Divine Energy Tattoo is excited for the upcoming launch of their mobile tattoo service, where they will offer tattoos on-the-go from their mobile tattoo trailer for events and private parties, bringing the tattoo shop to the client.

Marycruz Flores can be reached for consultations, booking appointments, and any other questions at 830-453-0077 as well as the shop’s Instagram account, @divineenergytattoo and the Divine Energy Tattoo website that will be up and running soon. Make sure to stop by during Walk-in Wednesday’s to check out the shop and let Marycruz and Priscilla answer any questions you may have!
