IDENTITY OF SUSPECT APPREHENDED IN CHIHUAHUA NEIGHBORHOOD REVEALED
Citizens of Del Rio reported the sighting and subsequent arrest of an allegedly armed individual in the Chihuahua area of the city on Friday, June 21, 2024. Many took to social media to post photos and videos, speculating on who the person was, their motives, and the extent of our local law enforcement’s response to the situation.
Both the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Department and the DRPD were present on the scene assisting the US Marshals in the apprehension of the suspect, leaving the community with questions and concerns about the details of the incident and the heavy law enforcement presence on the scene.
Connect Del Rio reached out to the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Department and the Del Rio Police Department for comment and received the following statement from both agencies:
"The Del Rio Police Department, Val Verde County Sheriff's Office, Department of Public Safety, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives supported the U.S. Marshals Service in the successful arrest of Apolonio Barrera. Barrera, who had active warrants for violating parole conditions related to evading arrest with a motor vehicle and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, was apprehended without incident. This collaborative effort highlights the success of multi-agency cooperation in achieving effective law enforcement results that keep our community safe. This is an ongoing investigation."
Sheriff Joe F. Martinez VVSO
Chief Frank Ramirez DRPD
The investigation is currently ongoing and we will be following the story closely with more updates for the community as we receive them.
