The scent of wood smoke and sizzling meat will soon fill the air as Del Rio High School's (DRHS) Smokin' Rams BBQ Club prepares to host its first-ever "Smokin' Rams Intercampus BBQ Competition." On Saturday, February 17th, 2024, the DRHS Cafeteria Parking Lot will transform into a battleground of culinary creativity, open to all students from DRHS, ECHS, CTE, DRFS, and Blended Academy.
Teams of three will test their grilling mastery across five mouthwatering categories: Pork Chop, Fajitas, Pork Ribs, ½ Chicken, and Chili. A panel of seasoned BBQ experts, including local pitmasters, teachers, and staff, will carefully evaluate each entry, ultimately declaring the 1st DRHS Smokin' Rams Intercampus BBQ Grand Champion.
But the Smokin' Rams BBQ Contest isn't just about the competition. It's a community celebration, with free admission for all. Student organizations will offer delicious food, drinks, games, and activities – even face painting for the little ones. It's a chance for families and friends to come together, support aspiring young chefs, and savor the flavors of authentic barbecue.
This event also highlights the exceptional work of the Career & Technical Education (CTE) Department, where the Smokin' Rams BBQ Club thrives. CTE programs cultivate real-world skills and ignite passions, and this competition is a delicious testament to that mission.
Chef Cortez, the heart and soul of the Smokin' Rams BBQ Club, seeks dedicated mentors, judges, and volunteers to make this inaugural event a resounding success. If you're a barbecue aficionado or simply want to support your community, reach out to Chef Cortez at adan.cortez@sfdr-cisd.org.
Additionally, the club needs BBQ pits and smokers to ensure every team has the tools they need. If you can lend your equipment for the day, please contact Chef Cortez.
