DRHS Cheer Media Day: Showcasing Team Spirit and Del Rio Pride
The Del Rio High School Cheer Booster Club and DRHS Cheerleaders held a Media Day as a "Meet & Greet" event for the community. This is their second annual Media Day, which was held at Mr. Gattis Pizza.
Marlene, the President of the DRHS Cheerleading Booster Club, alongside Vice President Sobi, opened the event by expressing their gratitude to all those present. "Media Day is our second annual event to promote the cheerleading program. It's a way for the community and our cheerleaders to come out and support their community at a local business and for community members to meet them and show their support," Marlene explained. She spoke about the cheerleaders' hard work and year-round commitment, continuously uplifting the school's athletics and community.
This year's Media Day was unique because it showcased the current cheer squads and honored the legacy of San Felipe High Cheerleading. Two Mustang alumnae cheerleaders from the 1960s were invited to share their experiences from a different time. One alumna recalled her time as a cheerleader: "When I was a cheerleader, we could do somersaults."Sometimes, we could jump. Some of us are better than others in the jumping department. I never could do a split. Anyway, we still had a lot of spirit." Their speeches served as a reminder of how much the sport has evolved while the core values of spirit and teamwork remain constant.
The event also drew support from the Mayor of Del Rio, who spoke highly of the cheerleaders' contributions. "You guys put that hype on every player out there. And by the way, you guys go to competitions and always bring good focus back to our community. This is awesome," the Mayor remarked. He remembered his time on the school board, emphasizing his strong connections with students and his ongoing support for youth activities in the community.
The cheer squads—varsity, JV, and Freshman—were excited to share their enthusiasm for the upcoming season. "Our team is looking forward to being able to support our sports this season. We're looking forward to showing Del Rio what our teams are capable of this year. And we're excited to see more crowd involvement this year, supporting our different sports."
As the day drew to a close, it was clear that Del Rio High School's cheerleading program is not just about the cheers and routines; it's about bringing together a strong sense of community and continuity. The stories from past and present cheerleaders and the enthusiastic support from local leaders made this year's Cheer Media Day a memorable event.
The DRHS Cheerleading Booster Club expressed its appreciation to everyone who attended and supported the event. It is looking forward to another year of excitement and success for the cheer squads. With the season officially kicked off, the cheerleaders are ready to continue their proud tradition, representing Del Rio with pride and spirit.
